DENVER – Food distribution by Globeville, Elyria-Swansea Coalition Organizing for Health (GES) will be available again this week in Denver on the Wonderbound campus on E. 40th Avenue.
In a communiqué from the community, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said food distribution would take place on Friday from 10am to 2pm or until supplies run out. The mayor will be present from 10 a.m.
Items to be distributed include grocery boxes, baby diapers, baby food, pet food, face masks, and hand sanitizer. Participants can also sign up for SNAP benefits and register to vote and win a competition from KS 107.5.
Christian Jimenez, assistant director of public affairs for the Denver Mayor’s Office, told Patch that other items such as feminine hygiene products and razors are also available for those who need them.
On Friday, the mayor’s office will also donate 100,000 face masks to small nonprofits across the community. The masks will then be donated to small businesses, churches, and local residents in need of face-covering, Jimenez said.
The Alpha Phi Alpha Brotherhood will also be on site on Friday to help residents register, the deputy director said. On average, the fraternity has registered 30 to 50 first-time voters every week since the initiative began.
The GES food donation setup also offers residents coronavirus tests and free flu shots, he said.
The fundraising page started in April, Jimenez said. In the first month, 100 boxes of products were donated. Now the site has about 60 tons of groceries every week – including meat, dairy and snacks, lunch and breakfast for kids.
In total, over $ 1.5 million worth of food was donated to families, representing nearly 2 million servings.
“It was an incredible opportunity to serve our residents in this capacity,” said Jimenez.
Those who wish to donate to the effort are encouraged to contact partners We Don’t Waste, WeCycle, and the Denver Rescue Mission.
The city’s distribution partners include the GES Coalition, SAME Cafe, We Don’t Waste, Weecycle, KS 107.5, SarCo, Bank of America, My Vision Nutrition, El Coco Pirata, Denver Rescue Mission, Denver Votes, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Hunger Free Colorado and Denver Police Department.
