True to the hot mess of the past twelve months, we were only five days in 2021 before the shit hit the fan. Take a break this weekend by crouching silently over your iPhone, obsessively catching up on the latest domestic terrorism news, and spending a few hours focusing on something else.
Food, for example. And definitely drink. Here are some distracting options:
Friday January 8th
Poka Lola, the delightful soda shop-inspired cocktail bar on 1850 Wazee Street, reopens its doors on Friday, January 8th. Yes, you can sit on a couch in a room that is not in your house and (legally) enjoy a drink from 4 p.m. But if the bar’s capacity fills up to 25 percent quickly (as it probably will), there are still heated patios to camp on Dairy Block Alley. Seating includes “private bubble pavilions” – also known as clear plastic tents – when dining in neighboring restaurants such as Seven Grand, Blanchard Family Wines, Kachina, or Foraged. Saturday January 9th
At this time of year, we usually talk about the National Western Stock Show parade, drinks at the Stockyard Saloon, and tea with the Grand Champion Steer at the Brown Palace Hotel. This year? Not so much (although you can still check out the no-frills Stockyard Saloon on 4710 National Western Drive, which we highly recommend). But you can also get a taste of the Wild West at Number Thirty Eight, 3560 Chestnut Place, which runs from Saturday, January 9th to Sunday, January 17th, with live country and bluegrass performances (i.e. on the open-air stage) to advertise Western Week accordingly), food specials like smoked turkey thighs and barbecue bao (although we have a hard time missing the K-pop fries) and bison’s tail, a whiskey cocktail with Forbidden Fruit (a historic liquor by Lee Spirits Co. of Colorado). currently the only manufacturer of the spirit in the country). There is no coverage, but reservations are required; Do them on the website of number thirty three.

Sunday January 10th
Rebel Bread bakery, which is currently selling its wheat products at Farmers Market LSQ at 1445 Larimer Street, is opening a virtual baking academy this month with online courses covering a variety of sweet and savory baked goods. First up? The Art of Tarts from 9am to 11am on Sunday January 10th where you will learn how to make a pat-in-the-pan crust and pastry cream cake. Sign up on Rebel Bread’s website for $ 39. You will also find a list of the ingredients you will need and details of future courses. Mark your calendars for pierogi classes (February 7th and 21st), sourdough bread (a full week of baking at Camp Bread from January 25th to 30th), and bagels (February 7th and March 7th).

Monday January 11th
Adrian Miller (also known as the Soul Food Scholar and the liveliest Denver Native we know) is hosting two virtual food events in January. The first, Books & Beyond, is on Monday, January 11th at 5:30 p.m. in partnership with the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation. It will focus on Miller’s career transition from attorney to food historian and writer, and his information will include favorite restaurants and recipes. Registration is still possible on the foundation’s website. While the discussion is free, a donation to the foundation is recommended.
And on Wednesday, January 20, Miller celebrates the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris with Presidential Soul: A Virtual Presidential Inauguration Event. Participants will receive recipes for four tribute menus prepared by chefs across the country. Music and dance; Conversations with black chefs who worked for former presidential administrations and were the subject of Miller’s second book, The Kitchen’s Cabinet: The Story of the African Americans who fed our first families from Washington to the Obamas; and author Jesse J. Holland, who wrote two books on the history of enslaved people in Washington, DC and the White House. Thursday January 28th
Essential props for the Flatirons Food Film Festival, one of the few food events that knows the real meaning of the word “move”. As in: The festival was postponed from October 2020 to January 2021. We’re asking other food event organizers to remove a page from the FFFF book and stop claiming, “Our bacon and brownie burger bash has been postponed from July 2020 to July 2021.” If they really mean, “We have ours crowded festival canceled this year because the world is on fire. “In addition to the correct and unusual understanding of the term, the festival has made another important decision, the celebration from Thursday, January 28th to Friday, February 5th, completely online to deliver. Watch movies about Evan Funke’s, the Los Angeles chef, in life after leaving his Bucato (Funke) restaurant; indigenous cooks struggling to maintain their traditional eating habits (Gather); the search for elusive wild cocoa and the perfect, sustainable chocolate (Setting the Bar); and a historical piece about a chef who sought his fortune in the early 19th century Wild West (First Cow) The festival’s website gives you an all-access pass that lets you watch the entire festival schedule – ten feature films and three shorts – for just $ 90, or two, four, and six packs for $ 22 to $ 80.
