Mesa County District Lawyer Conducts Felony Investigation into Voting System Passwords Disclosure – CBS Denver

DENVER (AP / CBS4) – Colorado state officials are investigating a county polling station after passwords for its voting systems were posted online, the secretary of state said Monday. The breach included specific passwords from Mesa County’s voting machines, Colorado’s Secretary of State Jena Griswold said in a statement.

The passwords were posted on a far-right blog, according to a spokesman for Griswold’s office.

Griswold called this a “grave violation” in a statement but said it did not happen during the last election or posed a risk to the state elections.

It is likely that the passwords were collected during software updates from voting machines in Mesa County on May 25, 2021, Griswold said.

“Yesterday I instructed the Mesa County clerk and clerk to obey the county’s election equipment, video, and other document inspections. The secretariat must prove that the chain of custody remains intact and that no unauthorized access to the voting machines has taken place in the district. Otherwise, it will result in the decertification of the specific voting equipment at Mesa. Colorado has the best electoral system in the nation with built-in security redundancies. As Foreign Secretary, my top priority is to ensure that all election security protocols are upheld and to protect the Coloradans’ voting rights, ”Griswold said in a statement.

Officials have asked to review the district’s election equipment and other relevant materials, including surveillance records and documents, from the district official and clerk. If violations are found, this can lead to the decertification of the district’s voting machines.

Mesa County District Attorney Dan Rubinstein has opened a criminal investigation. He said he hadn’t spoken to Tina Peters, the secretary and clerk for Mesa County, in a while.

Mesa County is a predominantly rural county in western Colorado that includes the city of Grand Junction.

State Republicans called for a review of Dominion’s voting systems following the 2020 elections, but election officials have repeatedly denounced statements questioning Colorado’s electoral integrity and Dominion has refuted claims of deleted or changed votes.
