A 30-year-old New York food truck institution, The Halal Guys, is opening its first Colorado location at the Aurora City Center on June 18.

Unlike in New York, customers at this outpost won’t line up outside for gyros and falafel platters. It’s a full 2,100 square foot restaurant and one of more than 90 franchise locations for the brand around the world.

Local owners Chris Bui and Kevin Than are bringing the concept to their home state. The Halal Guys started on the corner of 53rd and 6th Avenues in New York in 1990, where Egyptian founders Mohammed Aboulenein, Abdelbaset Elsayed and Ahmed Elsaka began selling food specifically for Muslim taxi drivers in Manhattan.

In the new restaurant, customers can order beef gyros, chicken and falafel sandwiches and platters, as well as side dishes with hummus and baba ghanoush and baklava for dessert. During the opening week, the restaurant is giving away free food to early diners every day, including free Halal Guys for one year to the first 50 diners on Friday, May 18.

The restaurant is open Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 1 am and Sunday to Thursday from 10 am to 10 pm, 14535 E. Alameda Ave., Aurora. More info. is available at
